Most sidewalks are built higher than the street. A curb is the raised edge that separates the path from the road.

Sometimes, there is even a strip of plants between the path and the road. People use different names for these paths depending on where they live. In the United States and Canada, most people say "sidewalk."

In some places, you might see a "shared-use path" for both walkers and bicyclists.

Sidewalks work by keeping people and vehicles in their own spaces. This separation helps keep everyone much safer.

In the past, sidewalks helped people avoid walking in horse manure. They also kept walkers away from moving horses and wagons. Today, they keep people away from cars and trucks.

Many sidewalks come in pairs, with one on each side of the road. Crosswalks give people a safe spot to move from one side to the other. In very busy city centers, sidewalks can sometimes take up more than half of the road. In some areas, the whole road might be "pedestrianized," which means it is only for people walking.

People have been building paths like this for a very long time. Sidewalks have been used for at least 4,000 years. The Greeks in the city of Corinth had them by the 4th century BC.

The Romans also built them and called them "sēmitae." During the Middle Ages, people stopped using separate paths for a while. Roads became narrow, and people and wagons shared the same space. In 1671, London made rules to help pave streets with cobblestones.

Later, the 1766 Paving and Lighting Act helped the City of London set up footways. These paths were made of Purbeck stone and raised above the street with curbs.

There are many ways to build a sidewalk today. In North America, many are made of poured concrete.

In the 1880s, Portland cement became popular for making sidewalks in the United States. Many concrete paths have special grooves to prevent damage. These grooves were patented in 1924 by Arthur Wesley Hall and William Alexander McVay.
