Stairs

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Stairs are a clever way to move between different levels. They bridge a large vertical distance by breaking it into smaller parts.

Instead of one huge climb, you take many small steps. These steps are usually rectangular platforms arranged in a diagonal line. This design lets people walk from a low floor to a high floor easily. You might see stairs in a staircase or even on an escalator.

Other ways to move between levels include elevators, ramps, or ladders.

Every step is made of two main parts. The tread is the flat part where you place your foot. The riser is the vertical part that fills the space between steps.

Some stairs have an "open riser," which means the space between steps is empty. Some treads have a nosing, which is an edge that sticks out over the riser. This can make the tread feel deeper. A stringer is a strong piece that supports the treads and risers.

There are often three stringers used to hold everything steady.

People have used stairs for a very long time. The concept of stairs is believed to be 8,000 years old. This makes them one of the oldest structures in history.

The oldest spiral stairs date back to the 400s BC. During the Medieval period, builders tried many different shapes. Later, the Renaissance era brought even more varied designs.

Architects have always looked for new ways to build them.

Stairs can take many different shapes and paths. A "straight run" goes from one floor to another without turning. Some stairs use landings to change direction. A quarter landing turns the path by 90 degrees. A half landing turns the path by 180 degrees.

You can also find winders, which are steps that are narrow on one side. These help stairs turn corners without needing a flat landing. Some stairs even look like they are floating in midair.

Safety is a big part of how stairs are built. Most stairs have a balustrade to keep people from falling. This is a system of railings and balusters. The balusters are the small vertical posts that hold up the handrail.

A newel is a large, strong post used to anchor the handrail. It is often bolted right to the floor for stability. Some handrails even have a metal core to make them extra stiff.
