A guard rail is a boundary feature that keeps people safe.

These rails prevent people from entering dangerous or off-limits areas. They work better than fences because they allow more light and visibility. You might see them at scenic overlooks or along steep hiking trails.

In buildings, rails at the edge of stairs or balconies are called balustrades. These can be very elaborate and beautiful. Some rails even look like cages on high towers like the Eiffel Tower.

Guard rails work by creating a physical barrier. In homes, they often use vertical posts called balusters. These posts are spaced so a small sphere cannot pass through.

In big factories, the rails work differently to control traffic. Most industrial systems use heavy steel tubes or ribbed rails. These are bolted to upright posts that are anchored into the floor. Some systems use one rail, while others use two or three. This helps people see the barrier and avoid tripping.

People have been making different types of rails for a long time. In 1933, a company called Armco developed steel highway guard rails. Around that same time, Kee Clamp Steel made a version for cattle in 1934. In the 1980s, governments began to care more about worker safety. This led to many new laws in the 1990s to protect people. In the US, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 helped this change.

Newer materials like polymer have changed how we stay safe. Polymer is a strong type of plastic used for many rails. In 1992, a company called Ideal Shield made yellow polymer covers for steel rails. This helped people see them more easily in dark factories. In 2001, a British company called A-SAFE made the first flexible polymer guard rail. These rails use impact dispersal to stay safe. This means they bend when a vehicle hits them. They soak up the energy and then pop back to their original shape.

Safety rails are part of many things you see every day. You might see a wooden railing around a deck or a patio. Some modern views, like the Grand Canyon Skywalk, use glass panels. This keeps the view open while still providing safety. In big cities, you see metal rails on bridges and overpasses. These help prevent accidents for drivers and walkers. Whether they are made of wood, steel, or plastic, they all have one job. They exist to protect us from accidental falls or crashes.
