A handrail is a rail made for your hand to grasp.

It provides safety and support when you move around. You often see them on stairs or escalators. They help prevent people from falling and getting hurt. In Britain, people often call these banisters. You might also find them in bathrooms to help on wet floors.

Handrails work by giving you a steady place to hold. They are held up in different ways. Some rails sit on top of small posts called balusters. Other rails are attached directly to a wall.

There must be enough space between the rail and the wall. This space is called clearance. Most rules say there should be at least 1.5 inches of clearance. This makes it easy for your hand to fit.

Many different rules help decide how to build them. In the United States, groups like the ICC and NFPA set these rules. There are also standards for people with disabilities. These are called the ADA standards. These rules say a handrail can be a circle shape. It can also be a shape that is not a circle. The rule says the rail must have a certain size around the edge.

Rules also tell us how high a handrail should be. For adults, the top should be between 34 and 38 inches high. This height is measured from the floor or the step.

In places like schools, children need their own rails. A second set of rails can be used for them. These should be no more than 28 inches high. There must be 9 inches of space between the two rails. This keeps children from getting stuck between them.

Handrails must be very strong to keep us safe. They must hold a continuous load of 50 pounds. They also must hold a single concentrated load of 200 pounds.

Different materials are used to make them. You can find rails made of wood, brass, or aluminum. Stainless steel is a very strong choice for outside use. Timber is also strong but may not last as long outdoors. Choosing the right material depends on where the rail will be used.
