Area (architecture)

An area is a special space in architecture.

It is a space dug into the ground. It sits right next to the walls of a building. People also call this a lightwell. Its main job is to let light into a basement. This helps the bottom of a house feel bright. It can also give people a way to enter the house.

This space works in a very clever way. It creates a gap between the street and the basement walls. This gap lets fresh air and sunlight reach low rooms. It can also act as a path for workers. They might use it to reach a coal store vault. This vault might sit under the pavement. The area helps keep the basement useful and clean.

Many people used areas in the Georgian period in the UK. During this time, many service rooms were in the basement. These rooms included the kitchen, laundry, and scullery. Areas were often closed in with iron railings. These railings were made of wrought iron or cast iron. They kept people safe from falling. They also became a pretty decoration for houses.

History shows how these spaces changed over time. In the 18th century, country houses used them too. Mereworth Castle in Kent is one example. The Abbey in Cumbria is another. These houses used basements to keep service tasks hidden. This let the main building look nice in the landscape. Areas stayed popular in cities until the early 20th century. This was because land was hard to find in cities.

Areas are still part of some modern homes. You can see an example at the Gamble House. This house is in Pasadena, California. The area there lights the laundry and service rooms. In the early 18th century, people called the area an "airy." This name suggests the space was for ventilation. Ventilation helps move air to stop cooking smells. It kept smells from moving to the rooms upstairs.
