Handrails can be attached to walls. They can also sit on top of balusters. These are the small posts that hold the rail up.

Handrails are made of many things. Some are made of wood. Some are made of metal like brass or steel.

Steel is very strong and lasts a long time outside. Wood can be strong too, but it may not last as long in the rain.

Rules tell us how to make them. For adults, the top of the rail should be between 34 and 38 inches high. This is measured from the floor or the edge of a step. In places for children, like schools, we use a second set of rails. These are lower to the ground. They should be no more than 28 inches high. This helps kids stay safe too.
