Escalator

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An escalator is a moving staircase that carries people between floors.

It is a very helpful tool in busy places. You can find them in shopping malls and large airports. They are also used in train stations and big stadiums.

These machines move large numbers of people very quickly. Unlike an elevator, you do not have to wait for a turn. If the power fails, the escalator can still work as a regular staircase. This makes them a very reliable way to travel through a building.

How does this machine work? It uses a motor to move a long chain of steps.

These steps are linked together one by one. They travel along a pair of tracks. These tracks are special because they keep the step tread horizontal. This means the part you stand on stays flat while it moves.

Because the steps stay level, people can stand on them safely. The steps cycle continuously to move people up or down.

Many inventors worked on this idea over many years. Nathan Ames patented "revolving stairs" in 1859 in Massachusetts.

He never built a working model of his design. Later, Jesse W. Reno made the first working version in 1896.

He called his machine an "inclined elevator." He installed it at Coney Island in New York City. This is known as the first working escalator installation. Other inventors like Leamon Souder and George A. Wheeler also had important ideas.

Charles Seeberger helped create the first commercial escalator in 1899.

He worked with the Otis Elevator Company to build it. Their machine won first prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.

Seeberger also chose the name "escalator." He used the Latin word "scala" to help create it. He wanted the name to mean a way to move from one place to another. For a long time, Otis owned the rights to this special name.

Today, many different companies make these moving stairs.

Some famous makers include Otis, Kone, and Schindler. You might see different types of steps in old buildings. For example, Macy's in New York has escalators with wooden treads.

Some very old escalators are even found in tunnels in Europe. These can be used by people walking or even by cyclists. Whether they are in a hotel or a metro station, escalators keep us moving.
