While we mostly think of them for exercise today, they have many different uses. Long ago, people used them to do hard work.

Ancient machines used animals or humans to power them. Some designs used a horizontal bar that rotated when an ox pushed it. Other designs used a vertical wheel that people climbed like a hamster wheel. These machines could lift buckets of water or grind grain into flour.

In the 1800s, treadmills were used in a very different way. An English engineer named Sir William Cubitt created them for punishment in prisons.

These machines were large wheels that people had to step on. It felt like walking up an endless staircase. Prisoners often had to walk for six or more hours every day. They could climb as much as 14,000 vertical feet during a shift. This was a very hard job used to keep prisoners busy. Some machines even used this power to pump water in mines.

Modern exercise treadmills work using a moving platform.

Most machines have a wide conveyor belt stretched between two shafts. An electric motor usually drives the belt to move toward the rear. To stay on the machine, you must walk or run at the same speed as the belt. This allows you to measure and control exactly how fast you are moving. Some lighter models are manual. These do not have motors and only move when you push the belt with your feet.

Many people helped develop the machines we use at home today. A mechanical engineer named William Staub created the first treadmill for home use in the late 1960s. He called his first model the PaceMaster 600. He was inspired by a book called Aerobics by Kenneth H. Cooper. Earlier, in 1952, Robert Bruce and Wayne Quinton invented a version to study heart and lung health. Today, hundreds of companies make these machines for gyms and homes. Most treadmills last about 7 to 12 years.

Today, treadmills are used in many amazing places.

Doctors use them in hospitals to test how well a person's heart works. NASA even uses special treadmills on the International Space Station. Astronauts use a safety harness to stay secure while they exercise in space. You can even find treadmill desks in some offices. These allow people to walk while they work on a computer. From gyms to space, these machines help people stay active.
