An elevator is a machine that moves people or goods vertically between different levels.

These machines are very important for modern life and accessibility. They allow people to reach high floors in skyscrapers where ramps would be too long.

Without them, many tall buildings would be very hard to use. They are also used in farming and factories to lift heavy materials.

Today, some smart elevators can even coordinate with each other to save time and money.

There are two main ways these machines work. In a traction elevator, steel ropes run over a grooved pulley called a sheave.

An electric motor moves the ropes to pull the cab up or down. A counterweight helps by balancing the weight of the car. This makes the lifting process much easier for the motor. Another way is using hydraulics, which uses liquid pressure.

A pump pushes fluid into a cylinder to move a piston that raises the platform. Hydraulic elevators are often slower but are cheaper to install.

People have been trying to lift things for a very long time. The Roman architect Vitruvius wrote about an elevator built by Archimedes in 236 BC.

In the Roman Colosseum, about 25 elevators were used to lift animals to the floor. In 1743, King Louis XV of France had a "flying chair" built for his palace.

Later, Ivan Kulibin built a screw-drive elevator for the Winter Palace in 1793. This screw system was a huge step toward the elevators we use today.

In the 1800s, many new inventions changed how elevators worked. In 1835, a company in England made the Teagle, which used a belt and counterweight.

Elisha Otis made a famous change in 1852 when he invented the safety elevator. This device stops the cab from falling if the cable breaks. He showed this to a crowd in New York in 1854 to prove it was safe.

In 1880, Werner von Siemens built the first electric elevator in Germany. This allowed elevators to move much faster and carry much larger loads.

Elevators are part of almost every big city you see today. They are the reason we can have huge skyscrapers filled with offices and homes.

Some modern elevators even use screens to help people pass the time.

In some places, green elevators are used to save energy. They can even recover energy while they move. You might notice different doors, like center-opening doors or large slab doors.
