They built buildings to help with this work.

These workers even brought new plants and animals to the island. In the 1930s, wealthy travelers used flying boats to visit. They stayed at a lodge named after the local birds.

Midway became very important during World War II. It was used as a place for ships and planes to refuel. In June 1942, a major event called the Battle of Midway took place.

Planes from Eastern Island joined Navy ships to defend the atoll. This battle was a major turning point in the war in the Pacific. During this time, the military built airstrips and gun posts. One of these was Henderson Field. Today, the area is a National Wildlife Refuge. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service looks after it.

Life on Midway is very different from life on the mainland. About 50 people live on Sand Island today. These are mostly staff and workers who help manage the refuge.

Most supplies must be brought in by ship or plane. They even use a greenhouse to grow some fresh fruits and vegetables. You cannot visit Midway just for a vacation anymore.
