Long ago, the Unangan people lived there. They had many villages. Later, Russian traders came to the island. They hunted sea otters.

During World War II, a big battle happened on Attu. This was the only land battle of the war on U.S. soil.

Japanese forces landed on the island in 1942. American forces fought to take it back in 1943. The weather was very harsh. Soldiers had to deal with snow and ice. Many people were hurt by the cold.

After the war, the U.S. Coast Guard stayed on the island. They ran a station to help with navigation.
