It is the largest island in the Severnaya Zemlya group in Russia. This island is so big that it is the 59th largest island in the whole world. It sits between two different seas. The Red Army Strait is to its north. The Shokalsky Strait is to its south. These two straits connect the Kara Sea in the west to the Laptev Sea in the east.

Most of the island is covered in thick ice. Half of the land has glaciers that reach down into the sea. There are five large, domed ice caps on the island. They are named Rusanov, Karpinsky, University, Vavilov, and Albanov. The Karpinsky ice cap is the highest point on the island. It reaches a height of 963 meters at Mount Karpinsky.

In the parts of the island that are not covered by ice, the land is very different. The ground is a dry tundra or a desert. Several rivers flow through these areas. The Podemnaya and Bolshaya rivers flow to the northwest. The Bedovaya and Obryvistaya rivers flow to the north. These rivers sit between the different glaciers. The coast of the island is not smooth. It has many rugged headlands and coves.

Scientists have found many clues about the past on this island. They have found fossils of ancient creatures in the ground. These include fossilized scales from creatures called thelodonts. One type of fossil is named Stroinolepis maenniki. Other fossils like conodonts were also found there. These remains come from very old periods like the Ordovician and Silurian. They help us understand what lived in this area a long time ago.

People first found the island in 1913. Boris Vilkitsky led an expedition to find it. It took much longer to map the area. Georgy Ushakov and Nikolay Urvantsev charted the islands between 1930 and 1932. People have used the island for science too. The Vavilov Meteorological Station worked there from 1974 to 1988. In 1989, a nuclear-powered lighthouse was installed on the island.
