It is part of the Severnaya Zemlya group in Russia. The island is the 59th largest in the world. It sits near several other islands. The Red Army Strait is to its north. The Shokalsky Strait is to its south. These waters connect the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea.

Much of the island is white with ice. Half of the land has glaciers. These are large sheets of ice that move toward the sea. There are five big ice caps on the island. The highest point is Mount Karpinsky. It is 963 meters tall.

In places without ice, the ground is a dry tundra. Scientists have found fossils here. These are old remains of creatures like fish. They help us learn about the past. A weather station worked on the island for many years. In 1989, a nuclear-powered lighthouse was put there. The island was first found in 1913. People mapped the area more fully in the 1930s.
