It is part of the Severnaya Zemlya group. This group sits in the Russian Arctic. It is the third largest island in that group. It is also the 82nd largest island on Earth.

Most of the island is covered in ice. Glaciers cover about 65% of the land. The Academy of Sciences Glacier is very big. It is the largest glacier in Russia. The ground is a tundra desert. This means it is a cold and dry place. You can find moss and lichens on the sand.

Boris Vilkitsky found the island in 1913. Other explorers mapped it later. They named it in 1931. They named it after the Komsomol. This was a union for young people. The island sits near the Red Army Strait. It is also near the Yuny Strait.
