Bolshevik Island

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bolshevik Island is in the Russian Arctic. It is part of the Severnaya Zemlya group. This island is the second largest in the group. It is also the southernmost island there.

The island is very cold. The average temperature is -17.7 degrees Celsius. Most of the land is mountainous. One peak reaches 935 meters high. About 31% of the island is covered by glaciers. These are large sheets of ice. Some big glaciers have names like Leningrad and Kropotkin. Most of this ice stays in valleys. It does not reach the sea.

Near the coast, you might see moss and lichen. These are small, simple plants. The shore has many deep bays and fjords. A fjord is a long, narrow inlet of water. Mikoyan Bay is in the north. The island also has many small islands nearby. One small island, Ostrov Tash, sits near the southern shore. There is a place called the Prima Polar Station. It sits near Cape Baranov. It is the only polar station working in Severnaya Zemlya.
