Wrangel Island is a significant Arctic landmass located in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug of Russia.

It serves as a major landmark separating the East Siberian Sea from the Chukchi Sea. The island is the 92nd-largest island globally and is roughly comparable in size to Crete. Its location is unique because it sits astride the 180th meridian. This placement causes the International Date Line to displace eastwards at this latitude. This adjustment ensures the island and the nearby Chukchi Peninsula remain on the same day as the rest of Russia. The small, rocky Herald Island lies just to the east of this large territory.

The island's physical structure consists of three distinct topographical zones. A wide southern coastal plain forms the bottom of the island. Above this lies a central belt of low-relief mountains that runs from east to west. The highest elevations are found within the Tsentral'nye Mountain Range. The northern section of the island is another wide coastal plain. The highest peak is Gora Sovetskaya, which reaches 2,138 meters above mean sea level. Most other mountains on the island reach heights just over 1,000 meters. Despite its high latitude and mountainous terrain, the island is not glaciated.

Geologically, the island is composed of various complex rock layers. These include folded, faulted, and metamorphosed volcanic, intrusive, and sedimentary rocks. The oldest layers are Precambrian rocks, which are about 500 meters thick. These consist of sericite and chlorite slate and schist. These ancient layers are intruded by granite and other types of rock. Overlying these are strata of Upper Silurian to Lower Carboniferous sandstone and siltstone. Up to 1,000 meters of Carboniferous to Permian limestone also exist here. These limestone layers often contain crinoid plates. The topmost layer consists of Triassic clayey quartzose turbidites.

The history of the island's naming is tied to an explorer who never saw it. Captain Thomas Long named the land after Baron Ferdinand von Wrangel. The Baron was a Baltic German explorer and an Admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy. He noticed large swarms of birds flying north and suspected an island existed. He searched for it during his Kolymskaya expedition between 1823 and 1824. However, he failed to locate the island during that specific voyage.

Wrangel Island is world-famous for its prehistoric connection to the woolly mammoth. While mammoths disappeared from mainland Eurasia and North America around 10,000 years ago, a small group survived here. Approximately 500 to 1,000 mammoths remained isolated on the island. They continued to live there for another 6,000 years. Radiocarbon dating shows they persisted until around 2500–2000 BC. This means they lived while the fourth dynasty of Ancient Egypt was active.

This makes Wrangel Island the last generally accepted habitat for the species.

Today, the island is a vital sanctuary for Arctic biodiversity. It is a "zapovednik," which is a Russian term for a strict nature reserve. This status provides the highest level of protection and limits human activity to scientific research. In 1976, the island and its surrounding waters were classified this way. The Chukotka Regional government extended these marine protections offshore in 1999. Because of its unique ecology, it joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.

The island hosts the highest density of polar bear dens in the world. It also supports walruses, bearded seals, and ringed seals.

The flora and fauna of the island are remarkably diverse for the Arctic. The island contains 417 species of plants. This is double the amount found in any other Arctic tundra territory of similar size. Many birds use the island as a breeding ground, including various species of geese and snowy owls.

The island also features a complex water system. There are approximately 1,400 rivers and about 900 shallow lakes. These waters have very high oxygen content and low salinity. This unique environment makes Wrangel Island a critical piece of the global Arctic ecosystem.
