He was born in November 1835 in the Kushmurun fort area. His family held a very high status in society. He was a descendant of the famous Genghis Khan. His father was a respected leader in the region. This background helped Shoqan receive a great education. He was known as a father of modern Kazakh history.

Shoqan's learning journey began at a very young age. At six years old, he attended a small school called a maktab. There, he learned the Kazakh language using Arabic script. Later, he moved to a military academy in Omsk. He studied many subjects while living there. He read literature in both Russian and English. These studies prepared him for his many travels. He spent the late 1850s exploring Central Asia.

His adult life was filled with many different jobs. He combined military work with geographic exploration. In 1855, he went on a mission to Issyq Köl. Later, he traveled to the city of Kashgar. He was even elected to the Russian Geographical Society. During his travels, he met the famous writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. The two men shared a great love for learning. They wrote letters to each other with much respect.

Shoqan did much important work for history and culture. He wrote many books about the history of Central Asia. He also collected beautiful epic poems from the people. One very famous story he recorded was the Epic of Manas. He gathered this story from a performer named Nazar Bolot uulu. His work helped people understand these old traditions. He also studied how local courts worked in 1863. These studies helped lead to new legal ideas in 1864.

Sadly, Shoqan faced many hard challenges later in life. He became very ill with a disease called tuberculosis. This sickness made it hard for him to work. He tried to return to the city of St. Petersburg. However, his health prevented him from staying there. He passed away on April 10, 1865, at age 29. People still honor his memory in Kazakhstan today. There is even a spring named after him in a national park.
