He was born in Denmark in 1681. Later, he joined the Russian Navy to serve the Tsar. He was a very skilled sailor and a cartographer. A cartographer is someone who makes maps. Bering traveled to many different parts of the world. He even worked on ships in the North Atlantic. His life was full of many big adventures on the sea.

Bering led two very large missions for Russia. The first was the First Kamchatka Expedition. The second was the Great Northern Expedition. His main goal was to map new lands. He wanted to see if Asia and North America were connected by land. He had to find out if there was water between them. This was a very important job for the Russian leaders.

The journey to the coast was extremely difficult. Bering and his team had to travel over land first. They moved across the Ural Mountains and many wide rivers. They used horse-drawn sledges to move through the cold. The group grew much larger as they traveled east. They had to find many more men and workers along the way. They also needed carpenters and blacksmiths to fix their ships. The trip took a long time because of the hard terrain.

Many people faced hard times during these long trips. The weather was often very cold and snowy. Some men faced starvation when food ran out. In the winter, the rivers would freeze over completely. The men had to move their heavy cargo on sleds. They even had to deal with deep blizzards.

Bering's work changed how people saw the world. Because of his maps, people knew more about the coastlines. Many places are named after him to honor his work. You can find the Bering Strait and the Bering Sea on a map. There is also a Bering Island and a Bering Glacier.
