The waters around them are part of the Salish Sea. This sea includes the Strait of Georgia and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Most of the land is hilly with some flat valleys. The highest point is Mount Constitution on Orcas Island.

Nature is very busy on these islands. Many different kinds of trees grow in the forests. You can find Douglas fir and western redcedar trees. Some trees, like the Pacific madrone, have bright orange bark.

Many animals live in the air and on the land. The islands have many bald eagles. You might also see deer or even foxes. In the ocean, orcas live in famous groups called pods. Some orcas eat salmon while others hunt for seals. Other sea life includes sea lions and whales.

People have lived in this area for a long time. The Coast Salish peoples, like the Nooksack, lived here first. Later, European explorers came to the islands. In 1791, a Spanish explorer named Francisco de Eliza explored the area. He gave many places their names. He named Orcas Island after a man named Horcasitas. Later, a British explorer named George Vancouver also sailed here in 1792. He met with Spanish ships to share information about the land.

A big disagreement once happened over who owned the islands. This was a dispute between the United States and Britain. It started because of a treaty made in 1846. The treaty did not clearly say where the water border was. This led to a small conflict called the Pig War. It was a stalemate, which means neither side won. Finally, the German Emperor Wilhelm I helped settle the matter in 1871. The border was set in the Haro Strait in 1872.

Today, the islands are a special place to visit. You can reach four of the islands by using the Washington State Ferries. This is a way to travel by boat.
