geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Inside Passage is a special water route for boats. It weaves through many islands on the Pacific Northwest coast. This path travels through three different places. It starts in Washington state in the United States. Then it moves through British Columbia in Canada. Finally, it reaches southeastern Alaska in the United States.

This route helps ships stay safe from bad ocean weather. It also lets boats visit small, lonely towns along the coast.

Navigating these waters can be a hard job. The weather is often hard to predict. There are very large tides that move the water. Currents can also be very fast or change quickly. Because of this, finding a safe place to park a boat is not always easy. In the Alaska part, there are 1,000 islands and many coves.

Captain Warren Good found 3,641 shipwrecks in the Alaskan section alone. This shows how tricky the waters can be.

People have used this path for a long time. During the Klondike Gold Rush, many people traveled this way. They were prospectors looking for gold. They sailed from places like Seattle and California to go north.

Today, the route is very busy with different kinds of boats. About 36,000 recreational boats use parts of the route for fun. Large cruise ships are also very common here. They often start their trips in Vancouver or Seattle.

British Columbia has a very long part of the route. This section is about 1,125 km long. It includes the wide Strait of Georgia. It also has the narrow Johnstone Strait. Large islands like Princess Royal Island help block the wind.

This makes the water calmer for boats. The route also goes near Haida Gwaii. In Alaska, the water goes through the Lynn Canal. The northernmost points are Haines and Skagway.

Many people visit the Inside Passage to see nature. You can go whale watching or look for birds. You can even see bears in certain spots. There are special places like Anan Creek and Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary.

Over 2 million people take cruises here every year. This brings a lot of money to the local area. Some people take small expedition boats to see wildlife. These boats are smaller than the giant cruise ships. They focus on watching animals in the wild.
