It follows the curve of the southern coast of Alaska. The shoreline is a mix of mountains and thick forests. You can also find many tidewater glaciers there. The Malaspina Glacier and Bering Glacier are the largest ones. They spill out onto the coast near the water.

This area stays ice-free all year long. This happens because of a warm water path called the North Pacific Current. This current is fed by the even warmer Kuroshio Current. Because the water stays warm, the gulf is a very busy home for life. It is a productive ecosystem with much carbon in its waters. You can even find deep water corals living there. One type is called Primnoa pacifica.

Scientists have watched how this water changes over time. In 1977, the gulf showed an unexpected shift in its climate. The temperature of the sea surface began to grow. This change happened during the 1970s in the North Pacific seas too. This warmer water led to more types of commercial fish. This means there was a greater variety of fish to find.

This part of the ocean is also a great maker of storms. These storms dump huge amounts of snow and ice on Alaska. Many storms move south along the coasts of other states. They reach Washington, Oregon, and even Southern California. Much of the rain in the Pacific Northwest comes from here. This is especially true during El Niño events.

There are many interesting places within the gulf's borders. Lituya Bay is a spot south of Mount Fairweather. It was the site of the largest recorded tsunami in history. The gulf also has large bodies of water like Cook Inlet. Prince William Sound is another very large connected area. Many fishing boats use the gulf as a safe place to anchor.
