This park was the very first one declared in Australia. It was founded by Sir John Robertson in 1879. This was only seven years after Yellowstone was made in the United States. In 1955, it was given its royal name. This happened after Queen Elizabeth II passed by on a train.

The land in the park changes a lot as you move around. Near the ocean, you will find tall cliffs and sandy beaches. Some of these cliffs reach nearly one hundred metres high.

Moving inland, the ground rises into high plateaus. These plateaus are broken up by deep river valleys. These valleys drain into Port Hacking at the north.

You can even camp at places like Bonnie Vale or Uloola Falls. You must book these spots before you arrive.

Nature has its own way of working in the park. Bushfires have happened here in 1939, 1994, and 2001. These fires can be very dangerous for people.

However, the native bush naturally grows back after a fire. By 2008, there were very few signs of the old fires left. The plants and trees help keep the land healthy. Some trees, like the scribbly gum, have smooth bark to help them. Other trees have stringy bark that helps new seedlings grow after a fire. This makes the park a very busy and living place.
