Virunga National Park

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Virunga National Park is a huge protected area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It sits in the Albertine Rift Valley in the eastern part of the country. The park is very large and stretches about 75 kilometers from north to south. It sits near the borders of Uganda and Rwanda. The park is split into three main areas called sectors. The North Sector is the largest land area and includes the Rwenzori Mountains.

The land in the park changes a lot from one place to another. In the north, the ground goes from low river valleys to very high peaks. The Southern Sector is famous for the Virunga Mountains. This area has many volcanoes, including two that are very active. These are named Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. These volcanoes have helped shape the different habitats found in the park.

People first started protecting this land a long time ago. It was created in 1925 as the Albert National Park. At first, it was meant to be a place for science. People wanted to study the wildlife and the local people living there. Later, the park grew in size and changed its name. In 1969, it became Virunga National Park. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

There are more than 3,000 different types of plants and animals in the park. Many of these are very special and only live in this region. You can find eastern gorillas and golden monkeys living in the forests. Because it has so many rare species, it is a very important place. The park covers a total area of about 780,000 hectares. It also includes parts of Lake Edward and Lake Kivu.

Life in the park can be very difficult and dangerous. There has been much fighting and unrest in the region since the 1990s. Armed groups sometimes enter the park, which makes it unsafe for people. Many brave park rangers have lost their lives while protecting the land. There are also debates about drilling for oil inside the park. Some people worry that oil production will hurt the forest and the animals.
