geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Virunga National Park is a very large park. It sits in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park is near the countries of Uganda and Rwanda.

This park has many different types of land. Some parts are low river valleys. Other parts have very tall mountains. The southern part has many volcanoes. Two of these are very active. They are called Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. These volcanoes help shape the land.

Many plants and animals live here. You can find eastern gorillas and golden monkeys in the park. Because it has so many special species, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Life in the park can be hard. There is much fighting in the region. Some groups use guns to fight for control. This makes it unsafe for people. Many park rangers have been killed while trying to protect the land. Also, some people want to drill for oil in the park. This could hurt the forest and the animals. People work hard to keep the park safe.
