It sits in the Albertine Rift. This lake lies on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The northern shore is near the equator.

Many rivers flow into the lake. These include the Nyamugasani, Ishasha, and Rutshuru rivers. The lake also connects to Lake George through a channel. Water flows out of the lake through the Semliki River. This river leads to Lake Albert.

Volcanoes have shaped this land. Lava flows once split a larger lake into two. Today, many crater lakes sit near the shore. One is Lake Katwe. It is a crater lake that makes salt for Uganda.

Many animals live here. You can find lions, elephants, and chimpanzees. Hippos are also very important. They help tilapia fish by providing food. However, poaching has hurt the hippo population. This makes it harder for tilapia to grow. This change affects local fishermen who catch fish for food and money.
