It sits in the Virunga Mountains. This volcano has a large crater at the top. The crater usually holds a lava lake. This lake is a pool of hot, melted rock. In the past, this was a very large lake.

Nyiragongo's lava is special. It has very low silica. This means the lava is very fluid. Most lava moves slowly. But Nyiragongo's lava can race downhill at 60 km/h.

This makes it very dangerous for nearby towns.

The volcano has erupted many times. In 1977, the crater walls broke. The lava lake drained in less than an hour. In 2002, a crack opened in the side. Lava flowed into the city of Goma. This event caused many deaths. It also left many people without homes. In 2021, another eruption happened. It destroyed many villages and homes. Scientists watch the volcano closely. They study the ground and the heat. This helps them warn people about new eruptions.
