It sits in the Andes Mountains. The mountain has a shape like a cone. It is the second highest peak in Ecuador. It reaches a height of 5,897 meters.

Cotopaxi has a large crater at the top. This crater has two rims. One of the few things special about it is the ice. The volcano has a glacier, which is a large mass of ice.

This ice can be dangerous. When the volcano erupts, the heat melts the ice. This creates lahars. Lahars are large mudflows. These flows can travel very far. In 1877, mudflows traveled into the Pacific Ocean. They even destroyed the city of Latacunga.

Scientists watch the volcano closely. They look for earthquakes and gas. Since October 2022, the volcano has had many earthquakes.

People can also climb the mountain. Many people try to reach the top on weekends. They must use special tools like ice axes to stay safe.
