A deep crater sits between the peaks. This crater holds a warm, acidic lake. We call this Crater Lake. The lake fills up with steam and melting snow. Sometimes, eruptions make dams out of ash. These dams can break. When they break, they let out a lahar. A lahar is a fast, destructive mudflow.

In 1953, a lahar caused a big train accident.

Ruapehu also has many glaciers. Glaciers are large bodies of ice. There are 18 glaciers on the mountain. Some are even inside the active crater! These glaciers are very sensitive to the weather. The mountain is a great place for skiing. Many people visit the ski fields on its slopes. Visitors must be ready for sudden storms.
