The top of the mountain has five craters. One crater has a green lake called Diego de la Haya. This lake can change in depth. The volcano is part of a large national park. Many animals live there. You can see foxes, owls, and hummingbirds in the forest.

Irazú has erupted many times. Since 1723, it has erupted at least 23 times. In 1963, it had a very famous eruption. It sent ash over the capital city, San José. This eruption lasted for two years. Scientists study how the volcano works. They found that magma, which is hot melted rock, can move very fast. In 1963, it moved from deep underground in just a few months. This is much faster than they once thought.

On clear days, you can see two oceans from the top. Most days, thick clouds cover the peak.
