Long ago, this volcano was much taller. A huge eruption 25,000 years ago blasted the top off. This made thick mudflows called lahars. These flows coated the sides of the mountain. The volcano became inactive later. A plug formed in the vent. This plug is called El Ombligo. It means "the navel."

The weather at the top is very cold. It stays cold all year long. You can see frost or snow in any month. The summit is often covered in fog.

Many people visited this place in the past. It was a center for special rituals. People left gifts like stones and pottery in the lakes. Some priests even visited to study the sun. Now, the area is a national park.
