Popocatépetl is a famous volcano in central Mexico.

Its name comes from the Nahuatl words for "smoking mountain." This name fits well. The volcano often lets out smoke and ash. It is the second highest peak in Mexico. People in Mexico City can see it often.

This is a stratovolcano. That means it is a tall, cone-shaped mountain. It has a wide crater at the top. The crater is shaped like an oval. Long ago, the mountain had glaciers. These are large masses of ice. The glaciers got smaller because of heat. They were mostly gone by the year 2001.

Popocatépetl is very active. It has had many big eruptions. Some eruptions sent ash high into the sky. This ash can even stop planes from flying. Scientists watch the volcano very closely. They look for changes to keep people safe. In the year 2000, many people had to leave their homes. This was to stay away from the volcano's activity. The volcano is about 730,000 years old.
