The volcano has one primary active crater. This deep crater is located at the southern end of the Summit Plateau. It is filled with a warm, acidic body of water called Crater Lake. This lake covers two active vents: the North Vent and the Central Vent. The lake undergoes cycles of heating and cooling every 6 to 12 months. During heating cycles, seismic activity increases under the crater. Volcanic gases also increase as the vents escape pressure. This open-vent system helps prevent massive pressure build-ups. Because of this, Ruapehu has small, frequent eruptions every 20 to 30 years.

Eruptions can create dangerous events called lahars. A lahar is a destructive mudflow. Sometimes, eruptions deposit tephra dams across the outlet of Crater Lake. These dams block the water from flowing into the Whangaehu Valley. When a dam fails, a massive outburst of water and debris occurs. In 1945 and 1996, eruptions created such dams. The 1945 dam failed on December 24, 1953. This caused the Tangiwai disaster, which killed 151 people. Another dam from the 1995–1996 eruptions failed in 2007. To manage this risk, the ERLAWS warning system was started in 2002. This system helps detect collapses and alert authorities.

The mountain has grown through four distinct stages of activity. These stages are recorded in different rock formations. The first was the Te Herenga Formation from 250,000 to 180,000 years ago. During this time, magma rose quickly through the crust. The second was the Wahianoa Formation from 160,000 to 115,000 years ago. By this stage, a complex network of magma dikes and sills had formed. This allowed different magma chambers to mix before erupting. The third was the Mangawhero Formation from 55,000 to 15,000 years ago. Finally, the Whakapapa Formation formed between 15,000 and 2,000 years ago.

Ruapehu is also a land of ice and snow. There are 18 recognized glaciers on the mountain. Six of these glaciers have specific names. Two are unique crater glaciers found inside the active crater. Most of the ice is held in three main glaciers: the Whangaehu, Summit Plateau, and Mangatoetoenui glaciers. The Summit Plateau is actually an ice field that is 130 meters thick. These glaciers are very sensitive to climate changes. Since 1955, most glaciers have been thinning and retreating. This change helps scientists understand how the environment is shifting.

The climate on the mountain is quite extreme. The upper slopes have a polar tundra climate. The lower slopes have a subpolar oceanic climate. Winds are often gale force, coming from the west or northwest. Rainfall is much higher on the western side due to the rain shadow effect. Whakapapa Village gets about 2,200 mm of rain every year. In contrast, the Rangipo Desert to the east gets only 1,500 mm. Because weather changes so fast, visitors must be prepared. In 2008, extreme weather forced the evacuation of 2,000 visitors from a ski field.
