The top of the glacier is covered in snow. The bottom part is covered in rocks. These rocks help protect the ice. They act like a blanket to slow down melting. Many smaller glaciers flow into the Tasman Glacier. These are called tributaries.

Since the 1990s, the glacier has been melting fast. The end of the glacier is moving back. This is called retreat. This melting created a large body of water. We call this a terminal lake.

In 2011, a large earthquake happened. This event caused a big piece of ice to fall. About 30 to 40 million metric tons of ice fell into the lake. This made large waves. People visit the lake on boat tours. They look at icebergs floating in the water. They must stay far away from the tall ice face for safety.
