Mount Erebus is a very special volcano in Antarctica.

It is the southernmost active volcano on Earth. This means it is the volcano closest to the South Pole that is still erupting. Captain James Clark Ross found it in 1841. He named it after his ship, the HMS Erebus.

The volcano has been active for 1.3 million years. Near the top, there is a lava lake. This is a pool of melted rock. It has been there since at least the early 1970s. The volcano also makes ice towers. These form when gas escapes from the ground.

Scientists study the volcano to learn about life. They look at tiny life forms in ice caves. These microbes get power from chemical changes in rocks. They do not need other living things to survive. Scientists even found tiny bits of gold near the mountain. The gold comes from gas the volcano lets out. This is the first time anyone has seen this happen.
