It is part of a big volcanic area. The ground here is very hot. This heat makes many hot springs. These springs have many bright colors. One is called the Champagne Pool. Another is called Artist's Palette. You can also see the Lady Knox Geyser. There are even pools of boiling mud.

The area is 18 square kilometers in size. It is 27 kilometers south of Rotorua. Long ago, the Ngāti Whaoa tribe lived here. They came from the Arawa waka, which is a canoe. Today, many people visit to see the sights. You can walk to see the pools. Some parts are a scenic reserve. This means the land is protected.

A business called Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland works there. A local Maori group bought it in 2012. This group is Te Arawa Group Holdings. People have visited this place for a long time. It is a famous spot to see nature work.
