The area has about 500 hot pools. It also has at least 65 geyser vents. A geyser is a hole that shoots hot water up. Seven geysers are active now. Pōhutu Geyser is a very famous one. It erupts about every hour.

Many geysers are on a spot called Geyser Flat. These geysers are all linked. When one moves, it can affect the others. For example, the Prince of Wales Feathers geyser often erupts before Pōhutu.

In the past, people took too much hot water from the ground. This made the geysers less active. People closed many wells to help the area. Now, the hot springs and geysers are recovering well.
