It is located in Ecuador within the Cotopaxi National Park. This mountain is the second highest peak in the country. It reaches a height of 5,897 meters above sea level. The volcano has a very symmetrical cone shape. It rises from a high plain that is 4,000 meters wide.

It is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a chain of volcanoes around the Pacific Plate.

The volcano works in a way that can be very powerful. At the top, there is a wide crater. This crater has two rims that circle the top. One rim is irregular and has less snow. Inside the crater, there is a flat area covered in ice.

A major danger comes from the summit glacier. When the volcano gets hot, it can melt this ice quickly. This creates lahars, which are large mudflows. These flows can travel down river valleys for a long way.

People have known about Cotopaxi for a very long time. Local people who speak Quechua call it by a special name. They say "coto" means neck and "paxi" means moon. This name describes how the crater looks like a crescent moon.

Long ago, Andean people saw it as a sacred mountain. They believed the summit was a place where gods lived. They even worshiped it as a sender of rain. This helped make the land fertile for growing food.

History shows that Cotopaxi erupts quite often. It has erupted 87 times in the past. The first recorded eruption happened in the year 1534. Some of the most violent times were in 1742 and 1744. In 1768, an eruption destroyed the town of Latacunga. Another big eruption in 1877 sent mudflows into the Pacific Ocean.

More recently, an eruption began on October 21, 2022. Since then, the volcano has produced about 8,000 earthquakes.

Today, many people visit the mountain for adventure. Up to 100 climbers might try to reach the top on weekends. They must use tools like crampons and ice axes. These tools help them walk on steep ice and snow. Climbers often stay at the José F. Ribas Refuge. This stone hut sits at an elevation of 4,864 meters.
