Llullaillaco is a massive, dormant stratovolcano. It sits on the border between Argentina and Chile.

This mountain is very important because it is extremely tall. It reaches a height of 6,739 meters. This makes it the second-highest active volcano on Earth. The volcano is part of the Llullaillaco National Park. It stands in a place called the Puna de Atacama. This area is near the Atacama Desert. That desert is one of the driest places in our world. Because it is so dry, very few plants grow here.

This volcano is a composite volcano. This means it was built by many layers of lava.

The mountain formed in two main stages. Scientists call these stages Llullaillaco I and Llullaillaco II. The oldest rocks are about 1.5 million years old. About 150,000 years ago, a huge event happened. Part of the southeastern side of the volcano collapsed. This created a debris avalanche. A debris avalanche is a giant slide of rocks and dirt. This slide moved very fast. It traveled from the summit all the way to the Salina de Llullaillaco.

Many people have studied this mountain over the years. The first recorded climb happened in 1950. In 1999, people found something very special at the summit. They found the mummified remains of three children. These are known as the Children of Llullaillaco. Because of these finds, the mountain is the highest archaeological site in the world. This means it is the highest place where people left things behind. The Inca empire once occupied this region. They lived here between 1470 and 1532 CE.

There are many interesting facts about the mountain's name. The name likely comes from the Quechua word for "false" or "deceitful." It might also relate to the word for "water." This could describe how snow melts and flows down the slopes. However, the water often sinks into the soil instead of staying on top. Some people think the name refers to dangerous floods in the valleys. Other translations come from the Aymara language. In Aymara, the name might mean "hot water." This could be a way to talk about volcanic activity.

Living on Llullaillaco is a very hard job for living things. The air is clear and the altitude is very high. The conditions are so extreme they are compared to Mars.

Even in this harsh place, some life survives. A certain species of mouse lives on the volcano. These mice live at a higher altitude than any other vertebrate species. This means they live higher up than any other animal with a backbone. The mountain also has a frozen lake called Lago Llullaillaco. It is one of the highest lakes in the world. The mountain stays a place of great wonder for scientists.
