Mauna Kea is a huge shield volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi.

It is the highest point in the state of Hawaii. The peak reaches 4,207 meters above sea level. However, the mountain is even more impressive underwater. Its base sits deep on the ocean floor. Because it rises so far from the bottom, some call it the tallest mountain in the world.

Its height from the sea to the peak is 15th in the world. But its prominence from the ocean floor is second only to Mount Everest.

This volcano works through a long series of changes. It began about one million years ago near a hot spot in the Earth.

First, it went through an active shield stage. During this time, it grew by layers of runny lava. Later, it entered a post-shield stage. The lava became more viscous, which means it was thicker and harder to flow. This thicker lava created steeper sides and small cinder cones. These cones are piles of volcanic rock near the summit.

History shows that the volcano has changed over many thousands of years. It is now considered a dormant volcano. This means it is not erupting right now, but it could again. Its last eruption happened between 4,000 and 6,000 years ago. Ancient Hawaiians held the peaks as sacred places. In the past, only high-ranking aliʻi were allowed to visit the summit.

They used the forests on the slopes for food. They also used the hard volcanic rock to make tools.

Mauna Kea has many unique features and records. It is home to Lake Waiau, the highest lake in the Pacific Basin. This small lake sits at 4,000 meters.

The mountain also shows evidence of past ice ages. During these times, snow stayed on the peak to form ice caps. These glaciers sculpted the summit and left behind gravel and rocks. Even though Hawaii is tropical, the summit can be very cold.

Scientists even found a tiny area of permafrost there.

Today, the summit is a very important place for science. The air is dry and the sky is clear. This makes it one of the best spots for astronomical observation.

Since 1964, people have built thirteen telescopes there. These belong to eleven different countries. These observatories help us study the whole electromagnetic spectrum. This means they look at many types of light from space. However, building these on sacred land is still a topic of debate.
