Haleakalā is a huge, active shield volcano. It covers more than 75% of the island of Maui. The name means "house of the sun."

Its tallest peak is named Puu Ulaula. This name means "Red Hill." Many people visit the summit to see the sunrise.

It is a very special place in Hawaii.

The volcano began forming about 2 million years ago. It grew along three rift zones. A rift zone is a crack in the earth where lava can move. The summit has a giant basin that looks like a crater. However, this basin was not made by a volcano. Instead, wind and water carved out two large valleys. These valleys merged at the top to create the big depression.

History and legends are tied to this mountain. Early Hawaiians used the name Haleakalā for the mountain. In folklore, the basin was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui. Legend says she helped him capture the sun. He forced the sun to slow down to make the days longer. Scientists also study its history using radiocarbon dating. They think the last eruption happened between 1480 and 1600. This is much later than some old maps suggested.

Many unique living things call Haleakalā home. The silversword is a rare plant that grows nowhere else on Earth.

The nēnē bird also lives on the island. Some forest birds, like the kiwikiu, are in danger from mosquitoes. Scientists are even releasing special mosquitoes to help protect these birds. There are also many snails and moths in the high areas. These animals depend on the mountain's special climate to survive.

The summit is also a world center for science. The air is very clear, dry, and still. This makes it a perfect spot for giant telescopes.

Experts from all over the world come to study space here. They look at things like satellites and rockets. Some researchers even work at a place called "Science City." The high elevation helps them see much more clearly than people at sea level.
