Mauna Loa is a truly giant volcano in the state of Hawaii.

It is the largest active volcano on Earth by mass and volume. This means it is a huge, living mountain. It is a shield volcano, which means it has a wide shape. Its slopes are gentle and look like a broad dome.

This shape happens because the lava is very fluid. The lava flows easily across the land. It does not usually cause big, scary explosions. Instead, it flows out to build the mountain up slowly.

This volcano works because of a place called a hotspot. A hotspot is a warm spot deep inside the Earth. It sends magma, or melted rock, up to the surface. As the Pacific Plate moves slowly, the hotspot creates a chain of islands.

Mauna Loa likely began erupting at least 700,000 years ago. It might have first risen above the sea 400,000 years ago. The volcano grows by adding layer upon layer of rock. It started as a volcano under the ocean. Then, it grew tall enough to reach the air.

Scientists have studied this mountain for a very long time. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has watched it since 1912. They use special tools to keep people safe. Near the top, there are two important stations. The Mauna Loa Observatory studies the air. The Mauna Loa Solar Observatory looks at the Sun.

Mauna Loa has many amazing numbers and facts. It covers a huge area of 2,035 square miles. The volcano is so big that it makes up half of the island. It rises from the sea floor to a very high peak. If you measure from the bottom, it is taller than Mount Everest.

The summit has three large pits called craters. One large area is the Mokuʻāweoweo caldera. This large crater formed when the ground collapsed 1,000 to 1,500 years ago.

This volcano is a big part of the world we know. It is part of the Decade Volcanoes program. This program helps experts study the most dangerous volcanoes. Mauna Loa is near other famous places like Kīlauea. These volcanoes even interact with each other. Sometimes, one volcano is active while the other is quiet.
