Mount St. Helens is a famous active volcano in Washington state.

It sits in the Cascade Volcanic Arc in the Pacific Northwest. This arc is part of a larger area called the Pacific Ring of Fire. The mountain is geologically young and formed within the last 40,000 years. Before its big eruption, it was very symmetrical and covered in ice. People even called it the "Fujiyama of America."

Many people visit it today to hike and see the landscape.

The volcano works because of a process called subduction. This happens when a dense oceanic plate sinks under the North American Plate.

As the plate goes deeper, it gets very hot and under high pressure. This causes water to escape from the rocks. The water makes the mantle above it melt into magma. This magma then rises through cracks in the Earth's crust. It collects in chambers deep below the volcano before it erupts.

A major event happened on May 18, 1980. A magnitude 5.1 earthquake triggered a huge debris avalanche.

This landslide caused a lateral eruption, which means it erupted sideways. The blast changed the mountain's shape into a horseshoe-shaped crater. The eruption was very destructive to the local area. It killed 57 people and destroyed 200 homes. It also broke 47 bridges and many roads.

History shows that Mount St. Helens has many eruptive stages. Scientists call the early periods the ancestral stages. These include the Ape Canyon, Cougar, and Swift Creek stages. The modern period began around 2500 BC and is called the Spirit Lake Stage. One huge eruption happened in 1900 BC. It left ash deposits as far away as Alberta, Canada.

The volcano stayed active after 1980 until the year 2008.

Nature is finding ways to grow back in the area. While the eruption hurt land ecosystems, it helped aquatic ecosystems. The ash provided nutrients that helped life in lakes multiply quickly. A new glacier called Crater Glacier even formed inside the crater.

It grew very fast from heavy snow and avalanches. Today, the mountain is part of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. This helps people learn about how our changing Earth works.
