This waterfall is very important to the park. In fact, protecting it helped create the park in 1939. There are six other waterfalls on the Murtle River nearby. These include names like Dawson Falls and Meadow Falls. Some are easy to reach by road. Others require long walks on trails or even travel by air.

This amazing place was shaped by fire and water. Long ago, lava flowed from cracks in the ground. This happened in the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field. Layer upon layer of fresh lava built up a large plateau. This process started about 200,000 years ago. Then, a different thing happened at the end of the last ice age. Huge floods moved through the area about 10,000 years ago. These floods wore away the lava to carve out the deep Helmcken Canyon.

A man named Robert Henry Lee discovered the falls. He was a land surveyor working for the government. In 1913, he walked west from his remote camp. He reached the top of the waterfall on July 24. He liked the falls so much that he wrote a letter. He asked to name them McBride Falls after a leader. However, the Premier chose a different name instead. The falls were named Helmcken Falls to honor John Sebastian Helmcken. He was a doctor who helped British Columbia join Canada in 1871.

Visitors have many ways to see the water. You can drive a short paved road to a viewing platform. This platform sits on the rim of the canyon. From there, you can see a wide view of the falls. There is also a path called the Brink Trail. It is 4 km long and follows the river bank. This walk takes about one hour to go one way. You can also walk to see where the Murtle and Clearwater Rivers meet. This walk takes about 30 minutes from the main view.

Winter turns the waterfall into a frozen wonder. Most people visit during the warm summer months. But in very cold winters, a giant ice cone grows at the base. This cone can reach 50 m in height. Sometimes it even grows halfway up the falls. The best time to see this is from late January to February. Some people even visit to climb the ice. They use special skills to climb very hard ice walls. People call this place the Yosemite of ice climbing.
