He grew up near the River Severn in Shropshire. As a child, he loved to play in the water with his friends. This helped him learn to swim by the age of seven. At that time, most people saw swimming as a medical treatment rather than fun. Webb was different because he truly loved the water. He even read sea stories that inspired him to work on big ships.

Webb had a very busy career on many different ships. He trained on the HMS Conway when he was only twelve years old. Later, he worked for the Rathbone Brothers of Liverpool on cargo ships. He sailed to many far places like China, India, and Singapore. During these trips, he showed he was very brave and strong. He once dove deep under a ship to cut a rope away from a propeller. He also jumped into the cold Atlantic Ocean to try and save a man. This brave act earned him the first Stanhope Medal.

In 1875, Webb became a hero by swimming the English Channel. He did this without using any artificial aids or special tools. He wanted to prove he could do it through pure skill. This was a big deal because others had tried and failed before him. To prepare, he moved to Dover to practice every single day. He even swam long distances in the river to test his strength. He was known to have a very red face after his long swims.

His successful swim from Dover to France was a huge event.

Webb wore a red silk swimming costume for the journey. He started his swim at 12:56 pm on August 24. To keep his energy up, he ate things like bacon, eggs, and beef tea. He also drank coffee, ale, and brandy to stay warm. Even when a jellyfish stung him, he kept swimming forward. He finished the long trip in about eight hours and 40 minutes.

Webb spent the rest of his life performing amazing water stunts. He once floated in water for 128.5 hours in America. He also won a long-distance race by swimming for over six days. Sadly, he died in 1883 after a difficult attempt at Niagara Gorge. His life showed people how much fun and skill swimming could be. He helped make swimming a popular activity for many people in England. His many adventures are still remembered by history today.
