He was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, to William Fergusson Irvine and Lilian Davies-Colley. As a student, Irvine showed a natural gift for fixing mechanical things. He even sent designs for aircraft parts to the War Office during the First World War. He was also a very strong rower. He won a race for the Royal Shrewsbury School Boat Club in 1919. Later, he won a race for the Oxford University crew in 1923. This was a special victory for Oxford.

In 1924, Irvine joined a famous expedition to Mount Everest. This was the third British attempt to climb the world's highest mountain. He traveled from Liverpool on a ship called the SS California. Irvine was only 21 years old at the time. He was very good at working with tools and machines. He improved the heavy oxygen sets used by the climbers. He made them lighter, stronger, and better to use. His teammates respected him for his hard work and his clever mind.

George Mallory was a very experienced climber. He chose the young Irvine to be his climbing partner. This was a surprise to many people on the team. They began their final climb on June 6 from the North Col. A climber named Noel Odell saw them on June 8. He saw them climbing high on the Northeast Ridge. Odell thought they were moving strongly toward the summit. However, the two men disappeared high on the mountain. No one knew what happened to them for many years.

Climbers found different clues on the mountain over time. In 1933, a man named Percy Wyn-Harris found an ice axe. Later, in 1991, an oxygen cylinder was found near the First Step. In 1999, explorers found the body of George Mallory. Mallory was found at about 8,200 meters on a snow terrace. His body was well-preserved by the cold. In 2024, researchers discovered some of Irvine's remains. These discoveries help us learn more about their final journey.

Many people wonder if Irvine and Mallory reached the top. Irvine was carrying two Vest Pocket Kodak cameras.

Experts say the black-and-white film might still work. If the film is developed, the photos could show the summit. Mallory had also planned to leave a photo of his wife at the top. That photo was not found on his body. This leads some to think they may have succeeded. Their story remains one of the greatest mysteries in climbing history.
