He is a British athlete who achieved something truly rare. He won gold medals at five Olympic Games in a row. This happened between 1984 and 2000. He is the only person to do this in an endurance sport. Endurance sports require great strength and stamina over a long time. His success brought him great pride and fame in Britain. He is remembered as one of the country's greatest Olympians.

Rowing is a sport that requires perfect timing and teamwork. Redgrave was a master of sweep rowing. In this style, each rower uses one oar to pull the boat. He was skilled at rowing on both sides of the boat. This means he could row both port and starboard. He often rowed in pairs or in groups of four. His most famous partner was Sir Matthew Pinsent. Together, they were considered the best pair in the world. They won many titles and showed amazing skill on the water.

Redgrave's journey to the top was not always easy. He had to face hard jobs regarding his health. In 1992, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. In 1997, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. These conditions can make training very difficult for an athlete. A documentary called Gold Fever showed his highs and lows. It followed his crew as they worked toward the gold. Even with these struggles, he never stopped his quest for victory. He showed great grit to keep racing at the highest level.

His career is full of impressive numbers and big wins. He won nine gold medals at the World Rowing Championships. He also won nineteen times at the Henley Royal Regatta. In 1996, his gold medal was the only one for the whole British team in Atlanta. Redgrave was also honored by Queen Elizabeth II. She made him a Knight Bachelor in 2001. This means he is now called Sir Steve Redgrave. He also received many honorary doctorates from different universities.

After he retired, Steve used his energy to help others. He ran the London Marathon three times. In 2006, he raised 1,800,000 pounds for charity. He also helped start a rowing academy in India.
