He was a master of middle-distance running. These are races that are longer than a sprint but shorter than a long marathon. Coe earned four Olympic medals during his career. He won gold medals in the 1500 metres race in 1980 and 1984. He is the only man to win two gold medals in a row for that specific event.

His success brought great pride to his country and the world of sports.

Coe was an incredibly fast runner who broke many records. He set nine outdoor and three indoor world records. In 1979, he set three world records in just 41 days. He set records for the 800 metres, the mile, and the 1500 metres. One of his 800 metre records lasted for 16 years until 1997. He also held four middle-distance world records at the same time in 1980. This was a very rare and special feat in athletics history.

His journey began in London, where he was born in 1956.

His father, Peter Coe, was an athletics coach. This helped Sebastian learn how to train from a young age. He joined the Hallamshire Harriers when he was 12 years old. A teacher named David Jackson inspired him to run. Later, he studied Economics and Social History at Loughborough University. He even used special strength exercises to get ready for his big races.

Coe faced many hard challenges and famous rivals during his career. He raced against other great Britons like Steve Ovett and Steve Cram. In 1982, he had to race while suffering from glandular fever. He also dealt with a serious illness called toxoplasmosis in 1983. Despite these health problems, he returned to win gold in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
