He is a very important person in the world of sports. He was one of the first great long-distance runners from his country. His success helped many other Kenyan men and women become great athletes. Today, Kenya is known as a strong force in track and field. Keino helped start this amazing tradition. He also served as the chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee. People admire him for his skill and his kind heart.

Running was his main way to show his talent. He competed in many different types of races. He ran the 1500 metres and the 5000 metres. He even ran the 3000 metres steeplechase. This is a race where runners must jump over hurdles. He was also very fast at the one-mile run. Before he was a famous runner, he played a game called rugby. He worked hard to become a world leader in racing.

Keino's journey began in a place called Kipsamo. He was born there on 17 January 1940. His name has a special meaning in the Nandi language. It means "born near the grain storage shed." After his parents passed away, an aunt raised him. He finished school and joined the Kenya Police. In 1962, he began his international career in Perth, Australia. He kept getting faster with every race he entered.

He achieved many great things during his career. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, he won a gold medal. He won that race by 20 metres. That was a very large winning margin for that event. He won another gold medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He also won a silver medal at those same games. In 1965, he broke a world record for the 3000 m race. He even broke the 5000 m world record held by Ron Clarke.
