He served as the second president of the country. He held this position from 1978 until 2002. This was the longest time any president has served in Kenya. Before he was president, he was the third vice president. He worked under the first president, Jomo Kenyatta. Moi was born in a village called Kuriengwo. This village is in the Rift Valley of Kenya. He belonged to the Tugen group of the Kalenjin people.

Moi spent his early years learning and working as a teacher.

He studied at the Africa Inland Mission school as a boy. Later, he trained at the Tambach teachers training college. He worked as a teacher from 1946 until 1955. In 1955, he started his journey in politics. He was elected to represent the Rift Valley. He even helped write Kenya's first constitution in London. In 1960, he started a political party named KADU. This party wanted a different way to run the government. Later, KADU joined the larger KANU party.

When President Kenyatta died in 1978, Moi became the leader.

At first, many people liked his style of leadership. He traveled across the country to meet many citizens. However, things became difficult for his government later on. In 1982, some members of the Air Force tried a coup. A coup is a sudden attempt to take control of a government. Moi stayed in power after this event happened. He made KANU the only legal political party for a time. This meant people could not form other parties to compete.

Over time, many people began to ask for more changes.

Other nations also pressured him to allow more freedom. In 1991, Moi allowed elections with more than one party. He won the elections in 1992 and 1997. Some people who watched the votes said they were not fair. During his time, some groups said he was a dictator. They said his government did not always respect human rights. Later, investigations found that there was corruption in his government. This included a large event called the Goldenberg scandal.

Moi finally left the presidency in the year 2002.

He could not run for a third term by law. A man named Mwai Kibaki won the election instead. This was a big change for the nation of Kenya. Moi lived for many more years after his time in office. He passed away in February 2020 at the age of 96. His life showed how much a single leader can change a country. He remains a major figure in the history of Kenya.
