He served as the second president of Kenya from 1978 to 2002. This tenure made him the country's longest-serving president. Before his presidency, he held the role of third vice president. He served in this position from 1967 to 1978 under President Jomo Kenyatta. Moi's leadership spanned a period of massive political and economic change. His life reflects the complex journey of Kenya toward independence and modern governance.

Moi was born in the village of Kuriengwo in the Rift Valley.

He belonged to the Tugen sub-group of the Kalenjin people. His father, Kimoi arap Chebii, passed away when Moi was only four years old. His elder brother, Tuitoek, became his guardian. As a boy, Moi attended the Africa Inland Mission school at Kabartonjo. He later trained at Tambach Teachers Training College. He worked as a professional teacher from 1946 until 1955. These early years shaped his path toward public service.

Moi entered politics in 1955 as a Member of the Legislative Council. He represented the Rift Valley region in this capacity. He later joined the Kenyan delegation in London for the Lancaster House Conferences. These meetings were vital for drafting Kenya's first post-independence constitution. In 1960, Moi founded the Kenya African Democratic Union, known as KADU. KADU was a political party that advocated for a federalist constitution. This was a rival to Jomo Kenyatta's party, the Kenya African National Union, or KANU. KANU favored a centralized, unitary state instead of federalism.

After Kenya gained independence in 1963, the political landscape shifted.

Kenyatta convinced Moi to merge KADU into KANU in 1964. Kenyatta then appointed Moi to his government. By 1967, Moi was promoted to the position of vice president. He faced opposition from a powerful group called the Kiambu Mafia. This group consisted of Kikuyu elites who wanted a different successor. However, Kenyatta protected Moi's position to ensure political stability. When Kenyatta died in 1978, Moi became the acting president.

Moi's presidency began with significant popularity across the nation.

He traveled extensively to meet citizens in a style different from Kenyatta. However, his government faced a serious challenge in 1982. Lower-level Air Force personnel attempted a coup d'état to remove him. The revolt was suppressed by military and police forces. Following this event, Moi consolidated his power significantly. He changed the constitution to make KANU the only legal political party. This turned Kenya into a de facto one-party state.

By the late 1980s, Moi's regime faced mounting international and domestic pressure. The end of the Cold War changed how Western nations viewed Kenya. Previously, Western allies saw Moi as a stabilizer against Soviet influence. After the Cold War, they began to view him as a despotic ruler.

Economic stagnation and rising oil prices also hurt the country. External pressure eventually forced Moi to allow multiparty elections in 1991. He led KANU to victories in 1992 and 1997. However, independent observers noted these elections were not always free or fair.

Human rights organizations and the United Nations raised serious concerns during his rule.

Amnesty International accused his regime of various human rights abuses. Investigations after his presidency also uncovered significant corruption. This included the Goldenberg scandal during the 1990s. Moi was constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in office. In the 2002 general election, his chosen successor, Uhuru Kenyatta, lost to Mwai Kibaki. This marked the end of the Moi era in Kenyan politics. Moi lived until 2020, passing away at the age of 96.
